We nodigen je uit voor een masterclass over regeneratieve AI. We zullen ons verdiepen in prikkelende perspectieven zoals algoritmisch verzet, kosmotechniek, inheemse AI-futures, technische ongehoorzaamheid, permacomputing, AI-forensisch onderzoek, feministische servers en meer.
We willen de koers die AI nu vaart, het soort innovaties dat het voortbrengt en de krachten die het vormgeven ter discussie stellen. Dit geldt ook voor de manier waarop onderwijsinstellingen en de creatieve industrie het nu lijken op te pakken. We nemen je mee op een reis langs subversieve creatieve perspectieven en uitdagende mogelijkheden van de huidige AI-hype. We hopen ons engagement ermee te herdefiniëren en de huidige beloften tegen te werken. We nodigen je uit om na te denken over manieren om het te herzien en te regenereren.
Twee vooraanstaande sprekers (kunstenaars/onderzoekers/onderwijskundigen) van buiten Avans zullen hun stimulerende en productieve manieren om kritisch om te gaan met nieuwe technologische ontwikkelingen door middel van creatieve projecten laten zien en toelichten.
Dr Eleanor Dare is Senior Teaching Associate, Educational Technologies, Arts and Creativity voor MPhil Arts, Creativity and Education aan de Universiteit van Cambridge en heeft lesgegeven en advies gegeven over digitale media, VR/AR, interaction design, game design, creatief computer programmeren.
Anna Nazo is performancekunstenaar, onderzoeker en docent. In haar praktijk houdt ze zich bezig met computertechnologieën, AI in de hedendaagse filosofie-poëzie en door de kunstpraktijk geleide wetenschap.
Wees niet bang: technische kennis is niet nodig. We verwelkomen ook mensen die helemaal niet van technologie houden of die het zat zijn hoe het over het algemeen wordt toegepast. Dit is zeker niet de zoveelste AI-innovatieworkshop. We houden van scepsis en weerstand. Laten we samenspannen.

En wie – of misschien beter: wat – kan eigenlijk luisteren, of iets vertellen? Kan een boom luisteren? En als dat zo is, wat nemen wij daar dan van waar? Wat horen we echt, en wat ontgaat ons volledig? Verwachten ze iets van ons? Willen ze dat we blijven – of juist verdwijnen? Wat kunnen we van hen leren? In deze workshop benadrukken we dat we samen een levend ecosysteem in en met deze tuin zijn.
The Garden maakt deel uit van een project waarin we onderzoeken welke rol tuinen binnen het onderwijs kunnen spelen. Wat leert een regeneratief perspectief ons – een manier van kijken waarin wederkerigheid en verbondenheid centraal staan? In deze workshop gaan we letterlijk met onze handen de grond in. We brengen in kaart wie en wat er leeft in de tuin van St. Joost. En we beginnen een ‘gesprek’ – een poging om op een andere manier in relatie te treden. Met elkaar. Met de plek. Met alles wat daar leeft.

What lives in St. Joost’s academy garden? How much do we really know about the beings who inhabit it? Who or what are they? How many are they? What are they trying to tell us? And who – or perhaps more accurately, what – is able to listen, or to tell? Can a tree listen? And if so, how does this register with us? What do we truly hear, and what might we completely miss? Do they want something from us? Would they prefer that we stay – or that we go? What might we learn from them? In this workshop we emphasize that together we are a living ecosystem in and with this garden.
The Garden is part of a project exploring the role that gardens could play within education. What can a regenerative perspective teach us – a way of seeing that centers mutual relationships and interconnection? In this workshop we’ll literally put our hands into the soil. We’ll map out who and what lives in the garden of St. Joost. And we’ll begin a ‘conversation’ – an attempt to relate differently. To each other. To the place. To all that lives.

Dit is een vierdaags programma waarbij we samen voedsel oogsten bij een lokale boer, dat verwerken en conserveren. Vervolgens gaan we er recepten van maken die we op de dag bereiden tot een maaltijd in het teken van regeneratieve processen zoals fermentatie, desembrood bakken en culinaire ingrediënten en experimenten.
We starten op 8 mei met een bezoek aan boer Marlies, waar we verse groenten ophalen. Daarna beginnen we met het kweken van koji, het opstarten van zuurdesem en het brouwen van kombucha.
Op 9 mei gaan we aan de slag met verschillende fermentatietechnieken: we fermenteren groenten, maken sojasaus en experimenteren verder met koji. Daarnaast drogen we schillen en andere groenten en bakken we brood.
Op 12 mei gaan we de eerste testen doen met de zelf gefermenteerde groenten en gaan we aan de slag met ijs en hoorntjes. We maken verschillende poeders van de gedroogde groenten en stellen een plan op voor het diner op 16 mei. Dit diner vormt de afsluiting van onze reeks en bestaat uit zelfgebakken brood met gefermenteerde groenten en een soep.
Door samen te werken en verschillende technieken uit te proberen, leren we niet alleen meer over fermentatie, maar ontwikkelen we ook nieuwe smaken en toepassingen voor een regeneratieve toekomst.

This is a four-day programme where we harvest food together from a local farmer, process and preserve it. We will then turn it into recipes that we will prepare on the day into a meal based on regenerative processes such as fermentation, dough bread baking and culinary ingredients and experiments.
We will start on May 8 with a visit to farmer Marlies, where we will pick up fresh vegetables. Then we will begin growing koji, starting sourdough and brewing kombucha.
On May 9, we will work on different fermentation techniques: we will ferment vegetables, make soy sauce and experiment further with koji. We will also dry peels and other vegetables and bake bread.
On May 12 we will do the first tests with the home-fermented vegetables and get to work with ice cream and cones. We will make various powders from the dried vegetables and draw up a plan for the dinner on May 16. This dinner will be the conclusion of our series and will consist of homemade bread with fermented vegetables and a soup.
By working together and trying different techniques, we not only learn more about fermentation, but also develop new flavours and applications for a regenerative future.

We kunnen de natuur helpen door te foerageren. Foerageren is een oude praktijk waarbij je je lokale habitat en ecologie moet kennen. In deze workshop behandelen we inheemse planten, rewilding, invasieve planten en het fermenteren van voedsel. Een invasieve plant is een plant die het vermogen heeft om te gedijen en zich agressief te verspreiden buiten zijn oorspronkelijke verspreidingsgebied. Met kennis van onze omgeving kunnen we deze invasieve planten niet alleen verwijderen, maar ook gebruiken in onze maaltijden, voor vezels en zelfs om te verven.
Tijdens de foerageerwandeling met een lokale expert leer je hoe je wilde eetbare planten kunt identificeren en gebruiken. We oogsten planten die in dit seizoen groeien en tegelijkertijd helpen we de natuur door invasieve soorten te verwijderen. De foerageerwandeling wordt gevolgd door een fermentatieworkshop waar je leert hoe je wild voedsel op een natuurlijke manier kunt bewaren. We gebruiken niet alleen natuurlijke processen om ons wild voedsel te fermenteren, maar we werken ook samen met levende dingen tijdens het foerageren en fermenteren.

We can help nature by foraging. Foraging is an ancient practice that requires knowing your local habitat and ecology. In this workshop you’ll learn about native plants, rewilding, invasive plants and fermenting food. An invasive plant is one that can thrive and spread aggressively beyond its native range. With knowledge of our environment, we can not only remove these invasive plants, but also use them in our meals, for fibre and even to dye.
During the foraging walk with a local expert, you will learn how to identify and use wild edible plants. We harvest plants that grow in this season while helping nature by removing invasive species. The foraging walk is followed by a fermentation workshop where you will learn how to preserve wild foods naturally. Not only do we use natural processes to ferment our wild foods, but we also work with living things while foraging and fermenting.

Tijdens het Studium Generale richten we een naaitelier in waarin je een aantal technieken leert om textiel te repareren. Dit is ook een aanleiding om het te hebben over herstel als regeneratieve praktijk. Verstelwerk heeft een belangrijke sociale en culturele betekenis. Lang vormden de zogenaamde sewing circles, die gezien kunnen worden als feministische praktijk, een plek die vrouwen de mogelijkheid bood om zich te uiten in het publieke domein en te netwerken. Dit is tevens een plek voor informeel leren, ontmoeten en informatie-uitwisseling. Meer recentelijk zijn feministische en queer craft circles plekken waar zorg (care) is voor zowel spullen als mensen.
In deze workshop onderzoeken we hoe we verstelwerk kunnen inzetten als een belichaamde en affectieve praktijk van denken-met materiële objecten. Dat doen we door middel van het onderzoeken en beoefenen van concrete transformatieve reparatiepraktijken. Denk daarbij aan zichtbare versteltechnieken, die blijvend onderdeel worden van de herstelde objecten.
Tijdens de workshop kunnen deelnemers hun eigen materiaal meenemen om te repareren of/en we werken gezamenlijk aan een kleed (of patchwork).

During the Studium Generale, we will set up a sewing workshop in which you will learn several techniques for repairing textiles. This is also an occasion to talk about mending as a regenerative practice. Mending has important social and cultural significance. For a long time, the so-called sewing circles, which can be seen as feminist practice, provided a place for women to express themselves in the public domain and network. This is also a place for informal learning, meeting and information exchange. More recently, feminist and queer craft circles are places of care (care) for both stuff and people.
In this workshop, we will explore how we can use mending as an embodied and affective practice of thinking-with material objects. We will do this by exploring and practicing concrete transformative mending practices. Consider visible adjustment techniques, which become permanent parts of the repaired objects.
During the workshop, participants can bring their own materials to repair or/and we will work collectively on a rug (or patchwork).

Hoe kunnen we bestaande klanken opnieuw gebruiken en herinterpreteren? Wat gebeurt er als we geluiden vervormen, herhalen of combineren met andere geluiden? Door te spelen met zowel analoge als digitale technieken, zoals stem, instrumenten, veldopnames en elektronische manipulatie, ontdekken we nieuwe manieren om met klank om te gaan. Regeneratie is het vertrekpunt van deze eerste verkenning: door klanken te hergebruiken en te transformeren, reflecteren we op bredere processen van verandering en onderzoeken we hoe hieruit nieuwe waarde kan ontstaan.
De workshop richt zich op experiment en samenwerking. Door te luisteren, te reageren en te improviseren, werken we samen aan een collectief geluidswerk. Aan het einde van de dag presenteren we dit in een gezamenlijke performance. Dit optreden is geen vaste compositie, maar een momentopname van het proces dat we hebben doorgemaakt.

How can we reuse and reinterpret existing sounds? What happens when we distort, repeat or combine sounds with other sounds? By playing with both analog and digital techniques, such as voice, instruments, field recordings and electronic manipulation, we discover new ways of dealing with sound. Regeneration is the starting point of this initial exploration: by reusing and transforming sounds, we reflect on broader processes of change and explore how new values can emerge from them.
The workshop focuses on experimentation and collaboration. By listening, responding and improvising, we work together to create a collective sound work. At the end of the day, we present this in a collaborative performance. This performance is not a set composition, but a snapshot of the process we went through.

Voel jij je aangetrokken tot wat weird, vreemd, rommelig of zelfs een beetje dirty is? In deze workshop worden deelnemers verwelkomd in een wereld van creativiteit die vaak over het hoofd wordt gezien in het reguliere curriculum van ACI en Avans. Deze wereld geeft ruimte en precedent aan wat normaal gesproken als ‘te weird’ of ‘te dirty‘ wordt beschouwd.
Door middel van een groepsopdracht die zich ontwikkelt van rollenspel tot dirty ontwerpen en maken, ga je aan de slag met een creatieve opdracht (met de materialen die je krijgt). Vanuit het perspectief van jouw toegewezen personage ga je tweedehands kleding customizen, slopen, freaken of juist versterken tot een kunstwerk. Ben jij een verslaafde? Een kraker? Of maak je deel uit van de Hells Angels? Of toch een tech start-up? Via een mix van toeval en uitdaging verkennen en erkennen we samen de realiteit van de dirty kant van de systemen van waardecreatie waarin we ons bevinden. We benutten onze aangeboren weirdness om de status quo opnieuw vorm te geven – met als doel te ontdekken welke alternatieven we samen kunnen verbeelden.
Als je conventionele ontwerpprocessen overboord wilt gooien, wilt experimenteren met hybride en transdisciplinaire methodologieën en nieuwe aspecten wilt ontdekken die je in je eigen kritische (artistieke) praktijk kunt opnemen, dan is deze workshop echt iets voor jou.

Are you attracted to what’s weird, strange, messy, or even a bit dirty? In this workshop participants are welcomed into a world of creativity and learning that is often overlooked by the regular curriculum at ACI and Avans. This world gives space and precedent to what might typically be considered ‘too weird’ or ‘too dirty.’
Through a group assignment that morphs from role-playing into dirty designing and making, participants will come at the provided task of creation (using provided materials) to customise, destroy, ‘freak out’, or enhance second-hand clothing into artworks from the point-of-view of their assigned character. Will you be an addict? A squatter? Will you be part of the Hells Angels? Or a tech start-up? Via a mix of chance and challenge, together we will explore and acknowledge the realities of the dirtiness involved in the systems of value creation we are in, rethink how we create, and use our innate weirdness to regenerate the status quo with the goal of seeing what alternatives we might be able to imagine, together.
If you’re into throwing conventional design processes out the window, experimenting with hybrid and transdisciplinary methodologies, and discovering new aspects that could be incorporating into your own critical (artistic) practices – this workshop is for you.

Werk in het Nederlandse veld van kunst en cultuur is economisch onzeker. Mensen houden van hun werk, maar worden ook bijna altijd onderbetaald en overwerkt. In deze tweedelige workshop gaan we gezamenlijk in op de vraag naar economisch regeneratieve culturele praktijken. Kunnen we ons voorstellen hoe zulke praktijken eruit zouden zien en eraan beginnen te werken?
In het eerste deel doorbreken we de taboes rond de economische kant van werken in kunst en cultuur. Hoe praat je over geld met collega’s en werkgevers? Hoe ga je om met onbetaald werk en de behoefte aan bijbaantjes? Kunnen we solidariteit vinden door ervaringen te delen?
In het tweede deel hebben we een speciale hybride verbinding met het programma Cuts and Currencies, georganiseerd door Amsterdam Alternative en De Appel in Amsterdam. Sepp Eckenhaussen (in Breda) en Koen Bartijn (in Amsterdam) zullen samen een lezing geven, waarin ze vertellen over verschillende initiatieven en modellen die zijn ontwikkeld om de sociale en economische regeneratie van kunst en cultuur te ondersteunen. Er zijn er veel, van schenkkringen voor het basisinkomen tot bottom-up beleid voor eerlijke praktijken, van coöperaties van atelierruimtes tot pensioenfondsen voor kunstenaars. Laten we discussiëren: kunnen deze ook voor ons werken?

Working in the Dutch field of art and culture is precarious business. People love their work but are also almost always underpaid and overworked. In this two-part workshop, we collectively address the question of economically regenerative cultural practices. Can we imagine what such practices would look like, and start working towards them?
In the first part, we will do some taboo breaking around the economics of art and culture. How do you talk about money with peers and employers? How do you deal with unpaid work and the need for side jobs? Can we find solidarity by sharing experiences?
In the second part, we have a special hybrid connection with the program Cuts and Currencies, organized by Amsterdam Alternative and De Appel in Amsterdam. Sepp Eckenhaussen (in Breda) and Koen Bartijn (in Amsterdam) will give a lecture together, highlighting various initiatives and models that have been developed to support the social and economic regeneration of art and culture. There are many, from basic income initiatives to bottom-up policy pushes for fair practice, from studio space cooperatives to artist pension trusts. Let’s discuss: can these work for us, too?

In deze workshop nemen we de deelnemers mee in het onderzoeksproject Cotton in Common. In dit project gaan de partners de uitdaging aan om katoen meerdere keren te recyclen, en bij elke stap waarde te behouden en creëren. Als laatste stap zal het katoen veilig teruggegeven worden aan het biosfeer als voeding, waarna een nieuwe cascade kan beginnen: een continue cyclus van regeneratieve katoencascades. Hoewel goede ketensamenwerking kansen biedt om de transitie naar regeneratieve ondernemen te versnellen, blijkt dit samenwerken -van elkaar leren, elkaar inspireren- een uitdaging.
We starten met een korte introductie van het project en delen onze eigen ervaringen van ons bezoek aan de katoenboerinnen in Zuid-India, waarmee we in gesprek zijn geweest over regeneratief katoenteelt. Deze aanpak bevordert bodemgezondheid, biodiversiteit en het welzijn van de boeren zelf. Onze ontmoeting met de boerinnen en hun manier van werken was niet alleen leerzaam, maar ook inspirerend en soms confronterend.
De weg naar regeneratief ondernemen begint bij bewustwording. In deze workshop dagen we de deelnemers uit om na te denken over manieren om ervaringen over te brengen – via storytelling, visuele middelen, interactieve tools of andere vormen van communicatie. Niet met cijfers of technische oplossingen, maar door de kracht van ervaring, emotie en persoonlijke drijfveren centraal te stellen. Door te werken met beelden, woorden en symbolen, verkennen deelnemers hoe je anderen kunt raken en meenemen in het verhaal van verandering. Wat zijn inspirerende voorbeelden? Welke ervaringen blijven hangen? En hoe breng je dit over op anderen, zodat ook zij in beweging komen?
De centrale vraag in deze workshop is: Hoe kunnen we ervoor zorgen dat anderen – ontwerpers, bedrijven, consumenten, beleidsmakers– dezelfde betrokkenheid en urgentie voelen als wij, zonder dat ze zelf naar India hoeven te reizen?
Je ontwerp van het regeneratief narratief is niet alleen een eindproduct, maar ook een startpunt voor gesprek: over wat echt binnenkomt, wat inspireert, en hoe verhalen kunnen bijdragen aan een duurzamere keten.

In this workshop, we will take participants through the research project Cotton in Common. In this project, partners take on the challenge of recycling cotton multiple times, preserving and adding value at each step. As a final step, the cotton will be safely returned to the biosphere as nutrition, after which a new cascade can begin: a continuous cycle of regenerative cotton cascades. While good chain collaboration offers opportunities to accelerate the transition to regenerative enterprise, this collaboration – learning from each other, inspiring each other- is challenging.
We start with a brief introduction of the project and share our own experiences from our visit to cotton farmers in South India, with whom we have been in conversation about regenerative cotton farming. This approach promotes soil health, biodiversity and the well-being of the farmers themselves. Our encounter with the women farmers and their way of working was not only instructive, but also inspiring and sometimes confronting.
The path to regenerative entrepreneurship begins with awareness. In this workshop, we challenge participants to think about ways to convey experiences – through storytelling, visual means, interactive tools or other forms of communication. Not with numbers or technical solutions, but by focusing on the power of experience, emotion and personal drivers. Working with images, words and symbols, participants explore how to touch others and bring them into the story of change. What are inspiring examples? What experiences stick? And how do you convey this to others, so that they, too, come into action?
The central question in this workshop is: How can we ensure that others – designers, businesses, consumers, policy makers – feel the same commitment and urgency as we do, without having to travel to India ourselves?
Your regenerative narrative design is not just an end product, but a starting point for conversation: about what really touches us, what inspires, and how stories can contribute to a more sustainable supply chain.

Er is animo, vooral onder collectieven, voor nieuwe manieren om samen beslissingen te nemen. Veel alternatieven voor de manieren waarop we gewend zijn democratische beslissingen te nemen zijn niet toegankelijk genoeg, omdat ze nog moeten worden geprototyped. In haar project Design for Collective Decision Making ontwikkelt Tara interfaces voor deliberatieve democratie en introduceert deze in de bestuursprocessen van verschillende gemeenschappen.
Een van deze interfaces is voor een procedure genaamd Quadratic Voting, die mensen in staat stelt hun voorkeuren uit te drukken door met meer overtuiging te stemmen over stemkwesties waar ze het meest om geven. Kwadratisch stemmen kan worden gebruikt als hulpmiddel voor medebestuur – om de kloof tussen beleidsmakers en burgers te helpen overbruggen. Of, in het geval van onze workshop, tussen beleidsmakers en studenten.
Tijdens de workshop bespreken en destilleren we de kwesties die het belangrijkst zijn voor degenen die regeren en degenen die geregeerd worden. Op basis van deze discussies zullen we samen een stembiljet opstellen en stemmen met behulp van een kwadratische stemtool. De tools die tijdens de workshop worden gebruikt zijn open source, wat betekent dat het experimenteren met co-governance in de toekomst kan doorgaan, zelfs nadat de workshop is afgelopen.

There is interest, especially amongst collectives, for new ways of collective decision making. Many alternatives to the ways we are used to making democratic decisions are not accessible enough, because they have yet to be prototyped. In her project Design for Collective Decision Making, Tara develops interfaces for deliberative democracy and introduces these into the governance processes of different communities.
One of these interfaces is for a procedure called Quadratic Voting, which allows people to express their preferences by voting with greater conviction on ballot issues they care about most. Quadratic voting can be used as a tool for co-governance– to help bridge the gap between policymakers and citizens. Or, in the case of our workshop between policymakers and students.
During the workshop, we will discuss and distill the issues that matter most to those who are governing and those who are being governed. Based on these discussions, we will set up a ballot together and cast votes using a quadratic voting tool. Following, we will discuss our observations and reactions to the outcome, and plan next steps to give credence to the commonalities the vote revealed.
The tools used during the workshop are open source, which means experimentation with co-governance can continue into the future, even after the workshop is finished.

Sebastian Olma is professor Cultural and Creative Industries. He works for the Expertise Centre Art, Design and Technology.

Michel van Dartel is Research Professor Situated Art, Design and Technology at the Avans Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design and Technology (CARADT) and was affiliated with V2_Lab for the Unstable Media between 2005-2024. He holds an MSc in cognitive psychology and a PhD in artificial intelligence.

Wander Eikelboom (1973) is a researcher and cultural critic who studied critical humanities at the University of Utrecht.
‘How do we live together, how do we work together? How do we give shape and form to ‘being together’ in the broadest sense?’
bas van den hurk is an artist, tutor and researcher. He studied Fine Art at Academy St. Joost in Breda and Philosophy of Aesthetics at the University of Amsterdam. van den hurk teaches contemporary theory, research and practice at St. Joost, and is a regular lecturer at different academies and institutions in the Netherlands and abroad.

Rikst Westra is a project leader at CARADT. She focuses on collective innovation for biobased transitions, exploring how design can drive inclusive and accessible stories. Her work bridges artistic practice with societal impact through collaborative action.
