Situated Art and Design (Research group) participates in RAAK MKB project

Through the group Situated Art and Design, researcher and teacher Tara Karpinski is involved in the RAAK SME research Design thinking for the Circular Economyarrow – Value transparency in the design of local platforms for the circular economy. This research is realized under the direction of the research group Play & Civic Mediaarrow of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA).

Within the project, Tara works as a probe designer. She combines her backgrounds as a designer and researcher. She investigates how situated design methods can contribute to value transparency in the design of local platforms for the circular economy.

Design Research

With this project, Tara aims to enrich research methods with “embedded” practices and strategies. Both soft and hard data from a community are essential to match designs to the specific characteristics of that community. This will include a strong emphasis on design research that combines ‘making’ with location-based explorations.

Economic and social values

For this research, Tara is designing a series of interventions in three different locations that will reveal the underlying economic and social values of these communities. The second phase of the project weaves these findings into a design for a new local circular economy platform. The project will continue until Mid 2021.

‘My practice is situated in between different actors, in this shape-shifting middle many things can happen.’

Tara Karpinski is a designer, researcher and educator working in the realm of social practice. She holds a BA in photography and art history from the Savannah College of Art & Design (USA), and an MA from the Sandberg Instituut (NL). Her Master studies were funded by a Netherland-America Foundation grant.

Research Group: Situated Art, Design and Technology

The research group Situated Art, Design and Technology (SADT) focuses on the societal embedding and embodiment of knowledge production that art and design research enables. The conducted research contributes to a deeper understanding of technological developments and their impact on people, society, and the environment, and to the development of situated approaches in the creative sector and beyond. In doing so, it advances a wider acknowledgement of artistic and design research as a mode of knowledge production, one that is grounded in creativity and critical imagination as a way of generating insight into, and intervening in, societal transitions driven by technology.
