The Participatory Design Conference (PDC) is a global event that focuses on participatory approaches in design, where practitioners and researchers from around the world gather to share insights, innovations, and challenges. This year’s theme, “Reaching Out: Connecting Beyond Participation,” emphasizes the importance of extending participatory design principles to new and diverse contexts.
Simone van den Broek’s paper, co-authored with Supraja Sankaran, Jan de Wit, and Alwin de Rooij, is titled “Exploring the Supportive Role of Artificial Intelligence in Participatory Design: A Systematic Review.” The study investigates the evolving influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on participatory design processes by reviewing 14 empirical studies to uncover how AI can enhance or hinder the participatory design experience.
The research highlights the potential benefits of AI in participatory design but the findings also point to significant risks. Altogether, the study underscores the need for further exploration into the reliability and participatory aspects of AI, as well as its potential to amplify vulnerabilities among stakeholders. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of AI’s role in participatory design and calls for continued examination of its ethical and practical implications.
