Michel van Dartel keynote speaker at online conference for Technology ♡ Art

Michel van Dartel is keynote speaker at the online conference for Technology ♡ Art on 6 October 2020.

Keynote

In his talk, Van Dartel discusses the need to concider aesthetics “in the wild”. Art is often made inside studios, to subsequently be experienced within the sterile environs of galleries and museums. For some time now, the question has been raised if this isolation limits art’s capacity to forge meaningful connections to the world we live in. The domain of art and technology offers unique opportunities to re-establish aesthetics ‘in the wild’.

A change that is urgently needed now technological progress is making the world around us increasingly difficult to fathom. As we live in cities developed around data and act within the inscrutable structure of the present-day economy, there exists an unprecedentedly urgent need for artists and designers to help us understand how we relate to our surroundings. Yet, how should aspiring artists be trained to make this change? And which artistic and teaching methods exist to stimulate this process?

Research Group: Situated Art, Design and Technology

The research group Situated Art, Design and Technology (SADT) focuses on the societal embedding and embodiment of knowledge production that art and design research enables. The conducted research contributes to a deeper understanding of technological developments and their impact on people, society, and the environment, and to the development of situated approaches in the creative sector and beyond. In doing so, it advances a wider acknowledgement of artistic and design research as a mode of knowledge production, one that is grounded in creativity and critical imagination as a way of generating insight into, and intervening in, societal transitions driven by technology.
