Carolina Valente Pinto

‘Art and design research is essential to address the complex world questions we face today, as they think and do with the world and not on it.’

As a researcher for the pilot Professional Doctorate in Arts + Creative, Carolina’s work focuses on interrogating publishing and “making public,” exploring approaches to sharing knowledge within the arts and creative fields.

I have been working as a media, art and design researcher, but also event programmer, writer and editor. I have a transdisciplinary background in New Media and Digital Culture (MA, University of Amsterdam) and Graphic Design (BA, Royal Academy of Art, The Hague). I have worked with the project “Collecting Otherwisearrow” at Nieuwe Instituut, where I researched alternative approaches and practices to tell stories previously hidden in their collection of Architecture, emphasizing feminist and decolonial lenses to read it. Within this research line, I have also co-edited the publication “Postingarrow“, part of the Archival Textures series, with Tabea Nixdorff, on design activist strategies inspired by feminist movements of the 70s and 80s in the Netherlands.

My research has focused, broadly, on the role of the media imaginaries that shape our digital spaces and communities. As an event programmer, I worked with The Hmm, a platform for inclusive internet cultures with a research focus on momfluencers, mapping strategies and blogging. Working as a researcher at the Institute of Network Cultures, I coordinated “Going Hybrid”arrow, a project researching alternative platforms, hybrid cultural events, and media activism that made bridges between Hogescholen and the cultural sector. This resulted in the co-edited publication “Screentime Airtime Facetimearrow“. At INC, I developed research and editing for the European-wide project “ex-pub: Exploring Expanded Publishingarrow“. I have also published, through INC, “All the directions we can go: alternative media networks and their infrastructures”, and co-authored with Michael Stevenson “Distinction and Alternative Tech: Exploring the Techno-Critical Disposition” in New Media & Society (2024). Interrogating publishing and “making public” continues to be a main research thread I hope to take on at CARADT and the PD programme.
