Sarah Lugthart receives FCT Doctoral Studentship

Sarah Lugthart (researcher in the Situated Art, Design and Technology group until 2024) has received a Doctoral Studentship from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in Portugal. This doctoral grant supports her ongoing research within the Digital Media programme at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), with CARADT as one of the host institutions.

Research project ‘Tacit Knowledge in Creative Practice’

Her research, currently in its second year, carries the working title: “Tacit Knowledge in Creative Practice: Engaging with Performative Mixed Reality Communities from a Post-cognitive Perspective.” It focuses on the role of tacit, embodied and materially engaged forms of knowing within the community of practice of performative mixed reality (PMR). The research seeks to articulate how such knowledge contributes to the development of creative practices and learning environments, and aims to contribute to advancing art and design education through a better understanding of how practitioners navigate complexity.

Involvement with CARADT

Lugthart continues to be involved in working group activities at CARADT. Her project is supervised by Professor Heitor Alvelos (University of Porto) and Professor Michel van Dartel (CARADT), who also serves as co-supervisor.

We warmly congratulate Sarah on this milestone and look forward to seeing her work continue to shape the discourse on knowledge, embodiment, and learning.

‘The tacit and embodied knowledge of practitioners about the complex reality of design can provide an important resource to innovate how we learn and teach’

Sarah Lugthart developed ethnographic methods to study immersive XR experiences and explored storytelling as a joint future-creation tool at CARADT. As a PhD candidate at the University of Porto, she blends theory and practice in immersive learning, contributing significantly to digital media and education.

‘People are the product of their relationships with their environment. It’s important to understand how technological developments influence these relationships.’

Michel van Dartel is Research Professor Situated Art, Design and Technology at the Avans Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design and Technology (CARADT) and was affiliated with V2_Lab for the Unstable Mediaarrow between 2005-2024. He holds an MSc in cognitive psychology and a PhD in artificial intelligence.

Research Group: Situated Art, Design and Technology

Living in cities developed around data and acting within the inscrutable structure of our techno-society demands art and design that can help understand how we relate to these rapidly changing surroundings and to reflect on that relationship. The research group Situated Art, Design and Technology responds to this exigency by fostering a situated turn in art and design through a diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary research projects in partnership with academic and cultural partners, as well as with government and industry.
