Workshop ‘Lux(ury) of Air’ at CASE Symposium

On February 6, 2025, the interdisciplinary symposium Arts❤️Sciences: Vakoverstijgend Onderwijs voor de Toekomstarrow celebrates 2.5 years of CASE (Centre for Arts, Sciences, and Education). This event, held in Amsterdam, brings together art, science, and education to explore how these fields can contribute to solving complex societal challenges. Among the selected workshops is Lux(ury) of Air by designer and educator Annemarie Piscaer.

CASE workshop 2025: Lux (ury) of air

About the workshop ‘Lux(ury) of Air’

In her workshop ‘Lux(ury) of Air‘, Annemarie invites participants to look at the sky as both a beautiful and critical space, where one of humanity’s most pressing challenges is taking place: air pollution. Invisible particles in the air affect health and the climate, prompting the question: is air a necessity or a luxury?

Participants will use a light meter to collect data about the sky’s condition (cloudy or sunny) in Lux. This data will be visualized through cyanotype printing—a hands-on process where sunlight transforms materials into deep blues. The sunnier the day, the deeper the blue. These cyanotype prints, along with the data, will be transferred onto scarves, creating wearable “snapshots” of the sky.

The workshop encourages reflection and speculation. Is the scarf a shield against the cold or the sun? Who do you give it to? Is it an offer of hope or despair through imagination -what future do you see?

Join the ‘Lux(ury) of Air’ Workshop

Spaces for the Lux(ury) of Air workshop are still available. This is a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on, interdisciplinary learning while reflecting on one of today’s most urgent environmental issues. Join us in making the invisible visible and exploring the intersection of data, art, and ecological awareness.

To apply or learn more, visit the CASE symposium pagearrow. Application closes Thursday January 23.

Terroir: Engaging Through Material with the Wild

‘Terroir: Mapping Data Through Material in the Wild’ is a research project led by Annemarie Piscaer. It explores how environmental factors influence materials and their narratives, using the concept of terroir. The project aims to develop new pedagogical principles around material mapping, integrating these insights into the curriculum at St. Joost School of Art & Design. Activities include expert meetings, workshops, and the development of a new minor, ‘Material Ecologies,’ in collaboration with the Urban Living Lab Breda.

Research Group: Situated Art, Design and Technology

Living in cities developed around data and acting within the inscrutable structure of our techno-society demands art and design that can help understand how we relate to these rapidly changing surroundings and to reflect on that relationship. The research group Situated Art, Design and Technology responds to this exigency by fostering a situated turn in art and design through a diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary research projects in partnership with academic and cultural partners, as well as with government and industry.
