Annemarie Piscaer’s accepted as a PhD candidate of the Doctoral Program at KU Leuven

We are delighted to share that researcher Annemarie Piscaer is accepted as a PhD candidate of the Doctoral Program of the Inter-Actions Research Unit at KU Leuven, LUCA School of Artsarrow, in Genk, under the guidance of Dr. Kristof Vrancken (Promotor), Dr. Sandy Claes (Co-Promotor), and Dr. Michel van Dartel (Co-Promotor, Professor at the Situated Art, Design, and Technology Group).

Her research Aerial and Airing, a Situated Design Approach: Mapping Environmental Data through Material will address the urgent and complex issue of mapping environmental data, particularly through the lens of ‘Air’.  The research challenges conventional approaches to data representation by integrating principles of situated knowledges, pedagogy and materiality into mapping practices. This situated approach is crucial in moving beyond traditional, hierarchical, and often detached methods of data visualization towards more inclusive and participatory frameworks.

‘Humans are atmospheric beings, particles, dust, in intimate cycles of exchange, actors with an incredible force.’

‘We need to become attuned actors with a deeper understanding of all the other particles.’

Annemarie Piscaer is a researcher in the Situated Art and Design research group and tutor on the New Design and Attitudes study programme at St. Joost School of Art & Design.

Research Group: Situated Art and Design

Living in cities developed around data and acting within the inscrutable structure of our techno-society demands art and design that can help understand how we relate to these rapidly changing surroundings and to reflect on that relationship. The research group Situated Art and Design responds to this exigency by fostering a situated turn in art and design through a diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary research projects in partnership with academic and cultural partners, as well as with government and industry.
