Barbara Asselbergs was a researcher within the Situated Art and Design research group from 2016 until 2020. She also was coordinator of the New Design & Attitudes at St. Joost School of Art & Design.
Barbara passed away on 22.10.2021 – after two years of intensive treatment and care – from the effects of leukemia.
Barbara Asselbergs completed both her BA and MA at St. Joost School of Art & Design. She has given guest lectures in visual communication and social design at educational institutions such as Minerva Academy in Groningen, Modern International Art & Design Academy in Chongqing, China, Vega School: Design, Marketing & Branding Degrees in Durban, South Africa, and the University of Applied Sciences Arts in Utrecht.
In addition to her work in education, she was specialised in Social Design and co-owner of the design studio DesignArbeid, where she dealt with questions around producing and maintaining liveable cities. For her work at the studio she looked at the ways in which citizens played an active role in shaping their cities, and how new media and technology contributed to this.

Research Group: Situated Art, Design and Technology
The research group Situated Art, Design and Technology (SADT) focuses on the societal embedding and embodiment of knowledge production that art and design research enables. The conducted research contributes to a deeper understanding of technological developments and their impact on people, society, and the environment, and to the development of situated approaches in the creative sector and beyond. In doing so, it advances a wider acknowledgement of artistic and design research as a mode of knowledge production, one that is grounded in creativity and critical imagination as a way of generating insight into, and intervening in, societal transitions driven by technology.
