LIVING ARTEFACTS – Emma van der Leest, Using Nature’s Principles for Design Challenges

Emma van der Leest is an experienced bio-designer who has been working in the field for several years. In this presentation she recounts her journey from design student to creative centipede in the world of bio-design, and explains how to get started from your own kitchen.

Van der Leest has collaborated with various (inter)national scientific institutes and universities which explore and foster crossover between design and science. She currently works as a co-curator for the Dutch Innovation Experience at Floriade Expo. She also collaborates with William Myers, curator and author of Bio Design and Bio Art, and with Next Nature Network, to bring the best bio-design practices together. Van der Leest teaches on the Growing Cultures module at Avans Master Institute of Visual Cultures (MIVC), and holds a research position in New Making Practices at Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.
