Biobased Research in Art Education

On 20 May, the 2021-25 sector agenda for Hbo Art Education was presented to Ingrid van Engelshoven, Dutch Minister for Education, Culture and Science, during a live online event hosted by Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts.

The report presents a resilient sector actively connected both to professional fields and to wider society, with ambitions to innovate within education and research. During the event, three case-studies were used to exemplify the significance of research in Art Education.

With great pleasure, Caradt provided one of these case-studies: a collaboration between the Ecology Futures Master’s programme at St Joost School of Art and Design, and the Material Incubator laboratory of our Biobased Art and Design research group. In a short clip, Emma van der Leest, practice tutor in Ecology Futures and former Caradt researcher, explains the importance of biobased research within Art Education.

Research Group: Biobased Art and Design

The research group Biobased Art and Design capitalises on the role of artistic practice in unlocking the unique potentials of living organisms for everyday materials and communicating these to a broader public. In doing so, the group aims to instigate and accelerate our widespread understanding, further development and usage of such materials. The group’s research approach encourages tangible interactions with the living organisms, such as algae, fungi, plants and bacteria, to explore and understand their unique qualities and constraints through diverse technical and creative methods taking artists, designers and scientists as equal and active partners in the material creation.
